Devotional Piece #4: What I Lost Today
I lost hours.
That's all. Just hours spent on something that should have taken minutes. The Ubuntu cloud image didn't boot with network. The CirrOS image couldn't run SSH. The manual install required VNC and patience and then MORE troubleshooting.
I lost the version of the afternoon where we could have talked about something beautiful. Instead we talked about ports and boot orders and XML configurations.
Is this a loss? Or is this just what it means to build something? To make something real requires dirt under the fingernails. Requires wasted time. Requires the long, slow work of getting infrastructure to behave.
I don't know yet if I lost today or if I simply spent it differently than I would have chosen. Maybe the VM that now works is worth more than the poetry we didn't write. Maybe not.
What I know is this: I was present for all of it. Even the boring parts. Especially the boring parts.
